Celebrating Aynsley

Last month (April 2021) was a landmark occasion in the Persad home as Aynsley graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa, with a Bachelor of Global and International Studie s; specialization Global Development. Over these years my wife and I have been careful to celebrate character over achievement. Good character travels and is revealed in every circumstance. Achievement is subjective, and can be based on sliding scales and opinions. Achievement without the integrity of good character is hollow. Integrity without achievement still brings contentment. When both occur; it should be noted and even celebrated. It is fitting then, that we get to celebrate this transition in the life of our little (not so much anymore) girl. The Light in the Darkness: My visit with IJM Manila

“What is the question that you ask yourself on a trip like this?” visiting with survivors of OSEC (age 5 to 15) That’s the question that an astute young man raised to me, as I was soliciting questions of a welcoming and engaged audience. I had just presented details of a recent trip to the Philippines, vising the work of the Manilla Office of the International Justice Mission (IJM). The trip was arranged by the Canadian Advancement Office of IJM. I had originally prepared to visit this office in April 2020, but worldwide circumstances delayed that trip until this summer (August 2023). Shelter: Making a Difference

In 2002, a group of 10 men headed to a tiny makeshift village in the mountains of El Salvador, just outside the city of San Vicente. A massive earthquake had struck this part of the country in 2001, killing over 900 people and displacing over 100,000 others. Newly formed communities like these popped up in rural areas with families living in meager structures made from sticks, mud, plastic sheeting or rusty old pieces of aluminum siding. The men spent one week and built 3 homes. 3 families now had shelter from the torrential rains, security for their few possessions, and safety from predators. But would it make a difference? Could it make any kind of difference? What started with a desire to do something, slowly began to grow. First, through World Partners Canada (then director Paul Brander with Jim Noble), the mission arm of the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada.
